A group of seven accused members of German far-left group face trial over multiple attacks

A group of seven people accused of being the German far-left militant group Antifa Ost went on trial on Tuesday, accused for violent actions against far-right activists that resulted in the nickname “the hammer group”.

International terror listing and legal charges

Earlier this month, the US government designated Antifa Ost as a terrorist organization along with multiple additional European far-left and anarchist networks.

Authorities in Germany claim the network was responsible for attacks on locations in the country and neighboring Hungary from 2018 through 2023. Among the incidents is the repeated targeting of a restaurant owner in central Thuringia, whose establishment was known as a meeting point for far-right supporters.

Certain individuals are said to have using hammers against presumed rightwing extremists, leaving some severely injured.

Trial details and international connections

The trial involving seven defendants is expected to run until mid-2026 in the city of Dresden, Germany. Two defendants, identified as Johann G. and Paul M, also face charges for attacks in Budapest during February 2023, coinciding with an annual event known as the “day of honour” that draws far-right participants from throughout the continent.

Separately, a different German individual, Maja T., is currently on trial in Hungary for four counts of attempted assault against neo-Nazis prior to the same rally in 2023.

Regional context and organizational structure

Eastern Germany has historically served as a breeding ground for both right-wing extremist and anti-immigrant youth groups, as well as the frequently radical anti-fascist networks that counter them.

Prosecutors describe Johann G. as a high-ranking member within Antifa Ost, tasked with planning attacks and bringing in new members.

Alongside Paul M, he is alleged to have arranged instruction courses where leftwing extremists practised combat techniques and simulated violent actions. At depots overseen by the suspect, the network allegedly accumulated hammers, pepper spray, concealment items and communication devices.

Previous convictions and global responses

Another militant previously active with the group, Lina E., became a symbolic figure within certain radical left communities following her conviction in 2023 for attacks on presumed far-right targets.

The US designation makes group members ineligible to enter the US, blocks financial holdings they could possess within the American economy and makes it illegal offering assistance to them.

The German right-wing Alternative for Germany applauded the US decision and called on the German administration to take similar action. However, the country's diplomatic office simply stated it had “acknowledged” of the US designation.

“The danger from the organization has recently decreased significantly. The ringleaders and particularly violent members have received convictions or are in custody.”
